Handbuilding Functional Pottery | All Levels (4-Week Session)

$225.00

This beginner-friendly four-week handbuilding pottery series focuses on creating functional forms while teaching the core skills of working with clay, with the goal of giving you the confidence to pursue your own ideas.

Each month features a rotating focus on functional objects meant for everyday use in the home. These projects provide a framework for learning core handbuilding techniques, including slab, coil, and pinch construction, while leaving room for individual interpretation rather than a fixed outcome.

Some students enjoy following along with the monthly focus, while others use the class to develop personal projects or expand on previous work. Both approaches are welcome, and your instructor will support you based on your experience level and goals.

If you’re new to hand-building, the monthly focus offers a clear and approachable starting point. If you’re returning or more experienced, you’re encouraged to adapt, reinterpret, or work more independently.

Spots are limited to 10 per class.

Open studio access is included, with studio hours available 7 days a week so you can continue developing your work outside of class time.

Course format:

4 weekly sessions (2 hours each)

Included with your registration:

• Approximately 12 lbs of clay

• Glazes and firing services (*additional fees apply for pieces larger than 6” in any direction)

• Studio tools provided during class sessions

• Access to open studio time for practice between classes

Tool Policy Update:

Due to recent changes in import taxes, we are no longer able to offer a free set of tools with class registration. Tools will still be available for use during class sessions, but not during open studio hours. We offer quality tool kits for sale at the studio, or students may bring their own tools purchased from an art supply store or online.

Open Studio Hours:

Monday–Sunday, 9am–9pm (excluding class times and a 1-hour closure before and after each class)

What to bring:

Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed-toe shoes.

Students are encouraged to bring their own apron and hand towel.

Age requirement:

This class is designed for adults. Minors ages 14–17 are welcome to participate with parent or guardian permission. A waiver must be signed in person by a parent or legal guardian on the first day of class during check-in.

A Note About the Process:

At Makers & Clay, the focus is on the journey rather than chasing a perfect end result. Pottery is learned through repetition, patience, and practice, and even experienced potters make the same forms many times before they get them right. Because pottery involves many variables, pieces can sometimes come out differently than planned. While specific results can’t be guaranteed, classes are meant to introduce people to working with clay or offer experienced makers a chance to reconnect with their practice or learn new techniques. The hope is that the experience sparks joy, curiosity, and continued making.
