Wheel 3 | Teapot Making (4-Week Course)

$225.00

In this four-week class, you'll focus on creating your very own wheel-thrown teapot, with the opportunity to also throw matching teacups. The class walks through creating and attaching all of the teapot components, with guided demonstrations and hands-on practice throughout.

If a teapot sounds a little daunting, that's okay — that's kind of the point. Stepping into something that feels a bit challenging is where a lot of the learning happens, and no one is expected to walk away with a perfect teapot on the first try. By the time most potters make a teapot they really love, they've made quite a few of them. At Makers & Clay, the focus is on showing up, having fun, and maybe stepping a bit outside your comfort zone. The more you show up, the more refined your practice will become.

Prerequisite: While not required, it is recommended that students complete our Lidded Vessels class or can confidently center and throw with 2–3 lbs of clay before enrolling.

Course format:

  • 4 weekly sessions with instructor (2 hours each)

  • Approx. 5 weeks of studio access (includes 7 days into the following month to finish glazing)

  • 7-day-a-week open-studio access (outside of wheel-throwing class hours)

Included with your registration:

  • Approximately 12 lbs of clay

  • Glazes and firing services (additional fees apply for pieces larger than 6" in any direction)

  • Studio tools provided during class sessions

  • Access to open studio time for practice between classes

Please note that studio tools are available during class sessions but are not provided during open studio hours. Tool kits are available for purchase at the studio.

Open Studio Hours: Monday–Sunday, 9 am–9 pm (excluding class times and a 1-hour closure before and after each class)

What to bring: Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and closed-toe shoes. Long hair should be tied back, and short nails are recommended for wheel work. Students are encouraged to bring their own apron and hand towel.

Age requirement: This class is designed for adults. Minors ages 14–17 are welcome to participate with parent or guardian permission. A waiver must be signed in person by a parent or legal guardian on the first day of class during check-in.

A Note About the Process: At Makers & Clay, the focus is on the journey rather than chasing a perfect end result. Pottery is learned through repetition, patience, and practice, and even experienced potters make the same forms many times before they get them right. Because pottery involves many variables, pieces can sometimes come out differently than planned. While specific results can't be guaranteed, classes are meant to introduce people to working with clay or offer experienced makers a chance to reconnect with their practice or learn new techniques. The hope is that the experience sparks joy, curiosity, and continued making.
