Ocarina Bird Making Workshop (Sculptural Musical Instruments!)
Part instrument, part sculpture—this workshop blends ancient tradition with hands-on creativity. Ocarinas, a type of globular flute, have been made from clay for thousands of years and found in cultures around the world—from Mesoamerica and South America to ancient China, India, and Europe. Though the word “ocarina” was coined in 19th-century Italy, the instrument’s roots run deep across history.
In this class, you’ll create your own functional ocarina using the pinch pot method, then sculpt it into the form of a bird—familiar or fantastical. You’ll learn how to shape and attach a mouthpiece, carve sounding holes to produce musical notes, and explore how form affects both sound and personality.
No experience is required, and all tools and materials are provided.
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little muddy—or bring your own apron.
Please arrive early to allow time for parking and check-in. Class begins promptly.
